The Halle aux Grains, or granaries, moreover, were only a dock. But the 18th century knew how to build it as a work of art, because - in old Provence, as in old France - art was not reserved for certain noble buildings; it was also found in utility buildings.

It was built in two stages: the southern part, on Place aux Herbes, now Place Richelme, was started in 1718 and interrupted during the plague of 1720-1721. The northern part - the most interesting -, on the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, dates from 1739-1761.
