The square as it is today is an identical reconstruction of the old model ravaged by the Second World War. During the 19th century, the first railway station in Prussia, the Potsdamer Bahnhof, was built on the site of today's square. It also saw the introduction of the first tram tracks in Germany and the first traffic lights in the 1920s.
