After ruling for only four years he met his death at the battle of the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This marked the end of the Roman Empire, both West and East, that had existed for nearly 1,480 years. This great tribute to the last Emperor is almost hidden amongst the greenery at the west end of Mitropoleos Square opposite the fabulous Metropolitan Church. A tremendous sculpture, it shows the hero in full armour brandishing a sword in his upraised right hand.
