Place des Jacobins extends over the former Jacobins convent destroyed in 1808. It owes its name to the Jacobin monks or Preaching Brothers of the order of Saint-Dominique who occupied the building.
This building then housed the Rhône prefecture under Louis-Philippe. The church, built in the 15th century, was demolished in 1808.
